The SHAPE
African Health, in partnership with The Rotaract Club of Calabar Unical,
and Millennium Fellows of 2022 carried out a joint project in some Secondary
schools in Calabar, Cross River State Nigeria.
The students were
educated about Personal Hygiene, diseases associated with poor personal
hygiene, as well as measures to prevent the emergence of diseases by taking
absolute care of their bodies through proper personal hygiene, self-care, and
sanitation.
The Basics of First
Aid, introduction to CPR, Heimlich manoeuvre, and what to do in case of
drowning. These teachings were supported by real-time practicals on a
volunteer.
The students were
active participants, and this gave us confidence in the effectiveness of our
project. In real-life emergencies, we can bet that Machala, Regina, and Samson
will take the initiative to administer first aid to a victim.
Later on, three
students were interviewed on what first aid and personal hygiene mean to them.
They gave glowing answers that hit the heart of the matter. Their attention to
detail, self-efficacy and audacious questions will remain evergreen in our
minds.
How are you changing
the health narrative in your community today?
This is one way we
